How to Regain Composure After a Job Elimination

The loss of a job can be an emotionally traumatizing time. You may even go through the five stages of grief after losing a job. So your position has been eliminated, or you have been fired or otherwise let go. How do you regain your composure, figure it out and become the comeback kid?

Every job elimination is an invitation to unlock creativity to create something new, establish a new reality, find that next chapter, and not to just give up on yourself. Turn off the circular thinking that there’s something that you didn’t do or could have done more of in order to keep the job.

Some things come to a natural end. In his book Necessary Endings, Dr. Henry Cloud talks about how sometimes for something to grow, you have to prune. Pruning sometimes means something is lost in the short term, but it can mean gain in the long term.

To regain your composure after job loss:

  1. Identify what you want in the next chapter of your life and career. What are your two to three non-negotiables or must haves? You’re not going to settle for less. You only get one life to live, and you’ve got another opportunity to give your best. You want to make sure you’re in an environment that challenges you and uses all your skills.
  2. Do an autopsy of what you have learned. Assess what went wrong, and how you intend to contribute differently and better in the next job, career, or business.
  3. Reach out to your mentors and sponsors. They may be able to provide guidance or connections to help you move into the next phase of your career.

If you experience a job loss, mentally move on. Check out of the old job and into a place of reflection and forward momentum.
